Doug,
Yeah that's a little puzzling. The engine could run rough for a whole bunch of reasons as simple as crappy spark plugs or poor injection system grounding. I'm gonna guess that the "shop" isn't a dedicated Saab place or they would have done more tests and provided more information. When an engine has low compression a good mechanic does the proper tests to determine whether it has a valve or ring problem. Valve problems are generally way easier to fix and C900 Saabs aren't prone to having ring to bore type problems unless they are abused (like chronic low oil level or dirty oil). What kind of oil leaks did it have and what was done to this engine? Whether you can do it yourself is a matter of your experience, skill level and ambition. There's nothing magical about rebuilding a C900 Saab engine, they're less troublesome than most, but it's a lot of work and money and you shouldn't do it if the problem lies elsewhere. The engine itself is very simple, the cylinder head is kind of high tech (1986 style high tech). Cheers
