Here's a real stumper! I am on the last leg of my Auto -> Manual conversion and the motor just will not start under it's own power. I can get it to run for about 5 seconds by using starting spray before cranking, and I can maintain it for about 10 seconds when spraying as it's cranking. This makes me think it's a fuel problem.

When she is running for the 10 seconds, the valves are quiet (oil has redistributed) the engine is smooth (timing is close).

Saab 900S 1991 w/ a 1989 5 speed.

I do respect your time and knowledge, and I try my best to seek before I ask. Based on every piece of information I have been able to dig off of this board, here's what I've done so far:

------

- Spark:
Firing order is set to the order etched in the head, not the Bentley, so correct. Fresh plugs, Strong blue/white spark on each. Timing is close, if not exact.

WEIRD: plug #1 is a lot blacker than the others. There was some backfiring until I adjusted the timing.

- Fuel:
Bentley fuel flow test checked out. (30 seconds of running the pump yielded just under a liter of gasoline). Fuel pump runs strong when jumped at the fuse box, and runs (not as loud) while cranking.

- Air:
Air mass meter has been tried while on and off the air intake manifold. APC vaccum line has been tested on and off. I re-ran all the vacuum lines with fresh hose. Putting the pedal all the way down doesn't seem to really have an effect other than revving the motor while it consumes the starting fluid.

- Injectors:
LED tested, saw the quick pulsing described in the book. All injector connector plugs are clean and conducting.

WEIRD: The resistance across each injector terminal is 13 ohms, not the spec'd 68 ohms at 68F.

- Electrical:
All 3 major ground points are good: Bat -> Motor/Trans, Bat -> Frame, Frame -> Air Intake.

The only connector on the main harness that's not connected is the shift up indicator.

------

My guess is that the problem exists in the fuel system, somewhere between the rail and the cylinder (injectors, possibly clogged). It's been about 3 years since the vehicle last ran. However, don't let me prejudice your response.

Any advice or tips you could provide me would be greatly appreciated!

Yours truly,
Taylor91
