Dale,
These days I make a rule of replacing every bearing in one of these units when I rebuild one. Back in the days when they were mostly virgins it was usually OK to just do the Pinion and layshaft bearings but in the absence of information to the contrary I just assume that they all have been rolling long enough (and rebuilt at least once) to justify new bearings. I used to cut the old bearings apart to see how they looked and it was pretty shocking. I saw front mainshaft, input assembly, and especially upper chainwheel bearings that felt OK but when cut apart were ratty as hell inside. That adds a couple of hundred bucks to the project but having to rebuild or replace the unit again in short order adds much more. Take a good look at your 1-2 shift fork. They tend to wear thin where they contact the synchro slider (or muff). The 3-4 forks usually show no wear at all (go figure). I used to throw reverse main and idler gears at these all the time too but the main gear is really expensive now if you can get it at all so maybe see if it can be touched up with a die grinder a little. Check the insertion depth of the bronze synchro balk rings. I tend to just replace those too but if they ride high enough they are generally OK to re-use. Take a good look at the stamped steel spring retainer plates of the synchro units. They are sometimes worn to the breaking point and inspect all the elements of the fifth gear unit carefully. Good luck
