how did your engine fail? Was it a bottom end failure like a thrown rod or a bad crank bearing, or was it a top end failure like a head gasket or or a failed timing chain. I would be safe to guess if this was an aftermarket turbo setup that your motor experienced a head gasket failure. Although it's an extensive repair, it can be done and the engine is not doomed. The thing is most mechanics hear users say they have a "blown" engine to describe a wide variety of failures that could be anything from a dead fuel pump all the way to a complete explosion. Saying an engine is "blown" is a common way of describing that the engine quit running suddenly and without warning.
I work in audiovisual, and the same goes for the term "feedback" which is typically used to describe any abnormal sound one may hear from an audio system no matter if it is truly feedback or not. I tend to service feedback complaints and "blown engine" complaints with an open mind, and find that the malfunction may be entirely different :) to the delight of the user!
