Old style e-brake question Rubber Donut

I was lubing my e-brake cable on my 1985 with the front handbrake and I broke the rubber donut that holds the cable sheath to the caliper. The cable assembly seems to be pretty stationary w/o this large rubber band thing but I'm using a cable tie in place of the donut until I find a better replacement. Does this piece have an important function?
