Yeah, after thinking about it for a bit that was the same conclusion I came to. (About the water pump) The belts were just over a year old. Less than 10k on them. The worst part of the replacement was when I stripped the lower PS pump mounting nut. We managed to get the belt on, but now it's loose (which I think means Pep Boys sold me the wrong size-since the PS pump didn't move) I'll have to cut and replace the nut tomorrow before I can properly tension it. I did have a matched set of conti alternator belts (they came taped together) but they aren't tensioning the same, so maybe they were taped but not actually matched?
The upside is that I took this opportunity to remove most of the non-functioning A/C system.
