The lack of kickdown is a common problem in Ramblers equipped with Borg-Warner automatics. In those cars it is usually caused by a sticking governor. I don't know if Saab's version of the B-W tranny is prone to the same affliction, but it might be worth looking into.
Reverse tends to blow out on the Ramblers as well. The B-W is prone to partly engaging reverse when the car is moving forward, wearing the reverse band prematurely. AMC had a service bulletin that recommended drilling a small hole (.020") thru the rear servo piston to prevent this.
I don't know how much was changed internally when the M35 and M37 automatics were adapted to the front-drive C900, so don't know how much info from the AMC experience with these transmissions is applicable here.
