well, what can I say...you're in the twin cities and I'm in DC. We will have to agree to disagree. But since I've owned owned both too -- in fac the same car, I'd have to say that for all the "don't lose boost" hooplare" the autobox, the improved gear ratio of the 5-speed absolutely smokes the AT in every respect. In fact, I wish I had my 0 to 60 numbers in the AT to compare to, .....there'd be no comparison.
I had to push it to pull into traffic a couple of days ago. I have 16-inch Aero rims with "Z"-rated tires. They were lit up into 2nd gear. Remember that "16-year old" comment... never mind.
Anyway, I am glad you've been so fortunate with your ATs: this was not my luck, nor is it likely for someone that buys a 100,000+ mile 900 today. If you;re gonna get excellent life out of either original tranny, it is best to know its history. My 2 previous Saabs were a 1984 and a 1986 900S (wife's cars), both of which went in excess of 210,000 miles on the original manual trannys.
Nevertheless, I respect the collecive wisdom of this forum enough that I dropped $1,850 for my Ericksson rebuilt, when I could have just as easily installed the perfectly functional 5-speed with 165,000 miles on it from my parts car. Such are the myriad of complicated decisions that face us all.
If you get down to DC let me know, I promise that you won't leave your engine or tranny laying on the road if you want to drag!
