This is not hard at all. Soak all of the bolts at least overnight with Liquid Wrench, WD-40, or PB-Blaster (about $4, if you have to buy it). Obtain a replacement turbo (about $100-200 on FleaBay) - I've got a Garret T-30 from my 1990 that I'd sell you for the low end of that range, or go with the Mitsubishi TD-04, those come by more rarely on Flea-Bay, but you can still get one for $100 if you shop it. Buy the same model as you have is generally a safe bet, but if you want to upgrade, now is the time. You can order a performance turbo from Swedish Dynamics or Jak Stoll for $500-800. You'll need a couple of gaskets and an o-ring for the oil return and Turbo to exhaust manifold gasket ($20-30), don't re-use. Buy a o-ring fittng gasket for the pipe that enters the back-side middle of the large plastic piping/ductwork between the turbo and the AMM. The old one will disintegrate/rip apart as you try to re-assemble the thing and you will have to wait 2-days for one to be shipped from the Saab warehouse to a dealer (or will be waiting on one from Saabsite). Speaking of which-go to the Saabsite and look at all of the parts - always very helpful to be able to visualize the thing taken apart.

Remove the turbo piping/duckwork. Unbolt everything. Be usre to un-bolt the holders for the metal water-lines if you have them, and the metal oil lines so that they can be moved out of the way freely. There is not a lot of clearance, and you DO NOT WANT TO BEND these to get them out of the way -- you will never get them lined up again and it will leak like a sieve. Clean up all of the gasket on the turbo and oil return line - permatex it when putting it back together - do let it sit over night before starting it up.

Overall, if you get a used turbo in good shape and do all the labor it is a $140 job. Might not be a bad idea to get a good used turbo at the junkyard and get the experience of taking one out as a test run-- but, that's more work. If you're going to put in a new one, it'll be more $500+. It take about 3-4 hours and is a straight bolt up job -- no adjustments or tricky issue, except a s mentioned above. You CAN DO THIS.
