1. If the clunk happens only when turning, it won't be the transmission mount, which is centerline to the engine. Did you check the two engine mounts? The passenger side one, being closer to the hot exhaust pipe, is typically the first to go.
2. Check the lower a-arms for cracks. This should be fixed ASAP before it breaks off. They can be repaired by welding reinforcing memebers, but the easiest and cheapest way is pulling from a junkyard
3. This is the least likely, but it did happen to my 88. One end of the REAR roll bar was sheared off completely. The strange thing is that the clunk comes, at least it seems to come, from the front! A visit to a welding shop took care of the problem. Check both the fronnt and rear roll bars.
