friction disc, the one with the friction lining? never seen one of those break!
anyway, yes, later models have a slightly bigger clutch plate (9" instead of 8"?),which is better at holding power. apparently you need the clutch slave that goes with that set-up, so i couldn't be bothered to make the change, and went with SD unit on original flywheel.
SD unit has rating to 300hp, is a 6 puck style plate, and feels great on the foot-just a fraction harder to press down than oem, nice and smooth take-off, highly recommended.
i would chalk your failure down to poorly rebuilt parts, and move on. get a 'rear' seal for behind the flywheel while you are there.
