the chain timing is a bit of a funny one on these cars- i have pulled my hair out several times trying to use those marks-they are put there to infuriate, i have decided!
the only way to set chain timing, IMHO, is to use the marks on the outside of the sprockets, as in the side facing the passenger. these marks should be perfectly perpendicular to the head while #1 is TDC. when you do that, you will see that the cam cap marks are off a little, towards intake, IIRC. i would go back in and recheck, before going any further, as this could cause exactly this issue.
