I hear you Paul. This system has caused so much anguish for so many loyal Saabniks, and this forum attests to that. I too felt I was entering revert- to- manual belt territory for my passenger side last week, but I am obstinate and determined, and I felt that with a better forum search and some time ( I am now retired so time is available), I could restore the system to original functionality. And it worked.
I am so pleased. I spent nothing, invested about 90 minutes in following Swedecar's great analysis in 2003 (it's in the archives under "passive belts"), and I now have passive belts that function like they did in 1989.
I have now saved myself the cost and time spent finding a suitable used manual belt, and several hours of installation, and then the result of an odd car with differing seat belts in front.
What I did is simple, since I always believe in keeping everything clean, everything dry, and everything shiny and well lubed, and most machines respond well to that approach. Before you go any further with your belts, follow the 1,2, and 3 approach and see what happens. When they work consistantly, the passive belts are fine. Wouldn't you rather maintain your Saab as it was originally designed and built? I would.
