I realize the removal of the thermostat does change the flow a bit in terms of timing and of initial heating of the coolant, but this was the one way I could eliminate the variable of the thermostat.... at this point I KNOW it is not sticking, as it is only a metal disc with a hole in the center! As far as the radiator, I "believe" it was new after a shop repaired the car in 2001, after a guardrail ran out in front of me. I never found the drain fitting and have used the lower radiator hose fitting to drain the radiator and to judge the flow of water. The coolant came out of the engine debris-free and flowing very quickly. I am wondering, though, if I should go ahead and replace the radiator.... and expensive step but I would like to reduce the heat build-up. And that appears a much easier job than the water pump replacement....
