disconnect the battery (cover terminals also) and wait about 30 minutes, the airbag shouldn't go off accidentally.
if you're still concerned, you can remove the airbag by undoing the two torx screws behind the wheel and pulling the airbag. you will need to disconnect the clockspring wire, and you should not turn the wheel while you have the unit out to avoid any risk of damaging the clockspring. since you're not removing the wheel, i think that's unlikely, but i'm not 100% sure about that.
also, do NOT turn on the ignition switch while you have the airbag out, if you do, you'll turn on the srs trouble light. then you need to reset the light, and your airbag won't function while the light is lit.
the airbag won't fire off in small light shunts, it requires a certain amount of force to cause the sensor to trip and fire the airbag. also, the airbag won't fire in rear end collision (no sensors in rear), only if you run into something head first.
if you've driven any car equipped with an airbag in the last 20ish years, you've had a potential grenade or two or four or six in your face in case of an accident. but the number of deaths from airbags are relatively rare, just remember if you have dual bags, don't put your child seat facing backwards in the passenger seat.
mark :-)
