The only way to tell that my family's 1988 900 had a head gasket was the coolant boiling after we shut off the engine. Does your engine coolant boil and overflow the expansion tank cap around fifteen minutes after turning the car off? When the head gasket leaks this way, the engine stops with one cylinder in compression, and if it is the cylinder where the head gasket leak is, it will overpressurize your cooling system and overheat it. When this happens, the coolant expands more than normal and finds the only outlet it has. That outlet is around the coolant reservoir cap.
The only way to identify where your oil leak is is to clean the engine and trace the leak. Keep in mind that leaking oil usually flows downhill. Common oil leaks for 900s include around the ignition distributor, around the valve cover, at the timing chain and oil pump covers, at the base of the dipstick tube (1983 and newer models) and beneath the crankshaft pulley. If the shop did a disastrous job, the car may also leak oil on the engine-transmission mating surface. Saab specifies a liquid sealant on this flanged surface. If the sealant is omitted, the engine will most likely leak oil. The only other place I can think of is around the oil filter mounting housing.
If your car is leaking transmission fluid instead (not very probable seeing that the leak is on the oil drain plug side) you can clean around the edges of the rear and side covers on the transmission and see if they leak.
Turbos may also leak around the unions for their intercooler oil lines, but I have no experience with this. I've never owned a turbo, at least not yet.
