If the brakes are going rock hard that is a symptom of the accumulator failure. do a search on the board, there is a GM pn and it's roughly $125 for the part, if you have the correct allen driver it's less than an hour to install and test.

If you don't have Bentley you need to purchase one. Also, if your local guy has been good to you, and if you want to continue to have him work on your car.... consider buying a second copy of the Bentley and give to your mech, maybe put a nice note inside the cover with your name and phone number too (he has them already so it's not like you are hitting on him).... this could buy you tons of free help from him and for the price worth the shot.
