So, after a number of great suggestions and considerable time trying to reason through this problem I go in through the speak grill as per Anders suggestion to try tightening the gauge ground. Sounds like a good plan until you actually try to get a 7mil wrench on that terminal. After a lot of fiddling and breaking off the speedo cable connector I did manage to get a wrench on the nut and may have moved it slightly. More likely, I just bumped it around a bit to established a better ground. Either way, it worked. Up ad down my hill in 90F temp and the gauge stays rock steady at 1/2. Thanks Anders. A tip for others that may try this at home, tape a string to the end of the 7mil wrench that way when you drop it you can just pull it up rather that fishing around with a magnet for a half hour or so. What we learn the hard way!
Thanks all. I don't think that I could keep this car if it wasn't for this board and since it is my wife's car getting rid of it may create other problems that I would like to avoid.
