Walter Wong has a fix (if it is the shift shaft coupler) for the later year "bow tie" unit. It's really for a road side fix, he uses stout zip ties to force the two pieces back together... I used it and it was fine for about 2000 miles, then the zips started coming apart... So I went through my used hose clamp bin and used to hose clamps to do the same thing, you need a helper in the car to go *slowly* through the range of all of the gears (engine OFF thank you!) with the clutch pressed in. Why? you need to make sure that the tighting portion of the hose clamp is installed such that it clears everything. Two clamps, car on two jack stands, flashlight, friend to move the gear shift as you say. about an hour wheels on the ground to wheels on the ground again. BEFORE you start this you can lean over with flash light and look between the belts on the engine and the firewall, look down to where the steering rack is, have your friend slowley front to back the stick shift to help you find the shift shaft coupler, then have them left to right through the "H" and note that either the shaft from the drivers area and the shaft from the engine (transmission actually) move as one, OR one is lagging, you may be able to see the mating surfaces open like a staper being opened to lay flat... it should *not* do that! If you have a Shift Shaft coupler that is round (about the size and shape of a D cell battery cut down to half height) then you most likely do not have this issue. It's the later "better" bowtie ones that do this...
