I dreaded this job for a LONG time on my 90 SPG - so much so, in fact, that the car sat for two years! I had the crank pulley separate, so I also replaced the seals.

Turns out though, that it wasn't all that bad. I did the whole job from the top. Following advice on http://www.fixmysaab.com I got the correct size socket (27mm?-can't remember), cut it down using a dremmel so there was only about 1/2" of bolt grabbing, and used the starter motor to break the bolt loose. I used a bolt, nut, and a bunch of washers tightened through one of the ac compressor mounting holes on its mounting bracket and cranked the breaker bar against that. It worked really well!
