As Ari said - differing opinions here. I stopped using sealant about 10 years ago on the recommendation of a factory-trained mechanic, and never once looked back. On the older valve covers with the thinner gasket it's probably a good idea, but on the newer valve covers with the thicker gasket it's certainly unnecessary. I use a spritz (TINY amount) of spray-on adhesive sealer on the valve cover itself to give it a little tack to keep the gasket in place, but that's it. I haven't had a leaky valve cover gasket ever.
