This sounds like the dreaded pinion bearing is failing

I am getting a noise in 3, 4, and 5th gears usually most noticable at 35-40 mph, but gets sort of drowned out by other road noise then. It seems to be most noisey in low RPM, high throttle periods. It just started up probably a day or so ago, and is very subdued. I want to take care of it though before it gets worse, as I've always heard the rule with transmission issues is they are cheaper to repair when the problem just begins.
The sound is sort of in pitch like the whir a cassette player rewinding a tape. It has a frequency rhythm to it though. It's frequency seems to be speed dependant, not RPM dependant. At about 40 mph, it is in frequency with a typical helicopter "chop chop chop". At 70 mph, it is more of the frequency of a Harley motor. The amplitude is louder when power is applied, but it can be felt in the shifter faintly when decelerating, although it cannot be heard
Doing a search back on pinion bearing issues, the noise I am hearing sort of fits the description, but most have described pinion bearing noise as being a continuous whir, versus a rhythmic noise. Could this maybe be an inner driver issue?
