I can effectively do what Fred did to get his fliver going and stopping in the cartoons.
The foot well of the car rotted out and I now have a "porthole" from about 2 inches up the forward angled fire wall(with support bracket) back to 2-3" short of the seat mount. The width is about 4 inches wide after breaking off the loose rusty crusty stuff.
So I will need about 8x20 sheet of steel(not SS) to cover the area and seal it with 2 rings of 3M 5200 ( I'm a boater so I am familiar with 5200 & 4200).
But I'm not a welder.... yet. Was thinking of buying the 90 amp 120v wire welder from Harbor Freight (on sale $120 this month) but for now I think I'll just do the 3M 5200 patch on the inside. My pal once used an old license plate but I'll try a bit better than that.
The inside surface material appears to have a rubberized coating painted white. I can square out the hole. I plan to coat the under side of the steel patch with POR-15 and then use the 5200 to stick/epoxy it to the floor, then I'd hit the bottom side exposed edges with por-15, seams with 5200 caulk and coat it all with paint and then spray rubberized black under coating. I hope that buys me a few years. By then I'll have learned about welding.
Any recommendations as to modifying my approach are appreciated.
