Full throttle boost blast, ends with powerloss/overheat

OK, first I accept the doomazz award, but honestly I was road testing a fix (I thought). Couple months ago my son drove this 89 (with 87Turbo engine) on a long road trip home from college. It began to boost crazily high and overheat, while having minimal power. We finally determined the timing was quite a bit off, and he timed it in an autoparts store parking lot and drove the last 400 miles home. I confirmed the timing was still slightly off and tweaked it to 16. Several folks herein suspected the distributor module, which is the same one, as yet untouched. So again tonight it was boosting real strong, then suddenly lost massive power, and the temp gage climbed right infront of my eyes in less than a 1/2 mile the car almost maxed into the red when I shut it down.
No intake plugs blown out from the boost, oil on dipstick looks fine, car still cranks, but "kicks back" about every 6 seconds or so, which I want to believe is due to the timing being so far off.
Tomorrow I get a tow truck and drag her home. Oh yes, this drivetrain has had substantial work....5 speed rebuild, head gasket, all the usual things done during the pinion bearing work.
Curious what y'all think could be root cause. Is it the miserable distributor module again?
thanks,
DET
