1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
Firstly - since this isn't the NG900 board, let me say that while I wish GM never got it's claws into Saab (the world would be a better place if c900's were still in production), I am very impressed w/the 95' 900s my wife insisted on buying x8 years ago. It had 150k on it at the time, but the charcoal cloth interior was MINT (now still nearly perfect)...& I have a weakness for any car w/a charcoal interior. I miss my black on black 77' BMW 528i w/real walnut trim...but even a 1980 Chevy Citation X-11 or 1981 AMC AMX makes me drool (go find some pictures before laughing). Day dreaming......oh, wife's car......besides, it was a serious upgrade from her old car, a Ford Tempo (ick!).
If I ever around to replacing that suprisingly reliable 95' 900s (230k now...usually returns 34 mpg) w/something newer, it'll probably be a 9-3 turbo. Hopefully when that time comes, as is tradition, I'll still have the old car taking up space in the driveway...beceause the auto climate control turbo models utilize is nothing more than a problem waiting to happen & I'll happily swap over the manual controls.
Whether or not the climate control is your problem I can't say, but for what it's worth:
- The top rad hose is most prone to failure due to the hot coolant coming off the cyl head.
- There is a 'pre heater' pipe running from a 'U' shapped hose off the water pump to the base of the thermostat...maybe it's internally rusted/clogged? Same goes for the radiator.
- Perhaps the impeller fell off the water pump? It happens - esp w/cheapo replacements.
- Maybe (probably) you've got a blown headgasket. Rock hard hoses kind of point to this. Any funny business going on w/oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil? Have you pulled the spark plugs to see if there's evidence of coolant getting into the combustion chambers? One or more plugs that are extra clean or that have greenish insulators are a dead give away.
- There was/is a problem w/unevenly torqued head bolts resulting in coolant & oil leaking (externally) from the RF corner (viewed from the front of the car) of the headgasket. I believe there was a service bulletin regarding this, recommending a simple re-torque of the head bolts as the fix. I doubt this is your problem, but it was worth mentioning.
My money is on a bad headgasket, but start by removing the air filter housing & loosening the serpentine belt (both very easy) & giving the WP pulley a spin...you won't be able to determine much from this, other than if there is extreme play, seizure or clanking. After that, pull the plugs then if still no clues, drain the coolant & check for blockages.
BTW, when I disabled the balance shafts in our NG 900 (only serious problem w/the car ever) I installed a new HEPU water pump as a preventive measure...that was at 177k, now more than 50k later it's still working fine. I mention this bc there's a lot of WP's out there & I'm happy I got the HEPU.
Best of luck.
