Bad ground Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Sat, 30 Aug 2008 21:20:42 In Reply to: headlight, Reed, Sat, 30 Aug 2008 19:11:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The left headlight has a bad ground connection.
The current goes from the left headlight fuse and into the left headlight lowbeam filament. It should go to ground, but the ground is bad. The current still seeks ground; so it flows back up through the left high beam filament, and finally finds ground through the right high beam filament. So your left is actually on with both the high and low beams and your right high beam is actually on, too. But the voltage is shared over three filaments, so it is dim. Disconnect the right headlight, and you disconnect the ground return of the left headlight, so it goes out.
Make sure the ground pin (black wire) in the headlight connector is corrosion-free. Then follow that black wire do the ground point at the radiator cross member. Disconnect the wires from the ground, polish up the mating surfaces with some fine sandpaper, and bolt them back down.
