mess! however, i didn't just keep driving. i did, however, drive from mid-town manhatten to brooklyn by doing a series of coasting-engine off (get the lights in run), and bump start/accelerate runs-car never really got much above 3/4 temp.
with your car, get a thorough diagnosis done first. never assume the worst- as ari stated, the head is pretty likely to have warped or cracked, depending on how bad it got. This black convertible (SiS) had been driven until it wouldn't go anymore, and there wasn't a part of the engine that i wanted anything to do with! I think your car could end up with a replacement head ($300) and a set of belts, all in for $1000. on the other hand, it could have fried the rings, like the white '93 cvt. it had also been driven till it stopped, but i risked it anyway. swapped the head, compression was down to 80-50-60-90 or so. but, being a turbo, and an auto, it went surprisingly well!
so, get some tests done, see what is really gone. good luck
