As Whitesaab notes, there is no fanbelt, but there are alternator/waterpump belts - two to be exact. Fanbelts harken back to an earlier day, but the idea is understood. But the belts don't both have to break at the same time. One can break, and the other one will keep working. So unless someone checks the belts periodically, they wouldn't know they had lost a belt. The first belt probably broke days or weeks ago.
Seeing as they kept driving the car under a broken belt condition, it's not surprising that they wouldn't have checked the belts periodically.
Eventually the extra stress kills the remaining belt.
I'd say he more likely warped the head than cracked the block, but that's possible. Since the 900 engine is pretty stout - except if you run it out of water or oil - there are cars around with bad bodies but decent engines. But it'll probably cost a grand or so to drop in a used engine.
