The idea of the check valve is to make sure there is fluid in the line, all the way up to the nozzle. When you hit the washer button, you get fluid immediately because the line is full.
If you don't have a check valve, the fluid drains back through the pump and into the tank. It now takes a few seconds for the fluid to fill the line before it squirts.
So what? If the windshield is wet, no problem. If the windshield is dry, or worse, dusty, you'll get a few swipes of the wiper on a dry windshield. This scratches the windshield. That's why just about every car has this feature.
I buy a bunch of them from eEuroparts to have on hand. No big deal. Cheaper than a new windshield, and safer than a scratched one.
