I think replacing the entire axle with a rebuilt is a better option, assuming you get a good rebuild. You pull the old axle. Pack the tripod (trans) side of the new one with grease and install. In the end, you have both new boots and remand/repacked bearings. AND, you still have the original axle to repack and reboot for future use should you need it. As mentioned, in either case, this is also a good time to replace ball joints if yours are suspect. BTW, as for retorquing the axle nut (220lb. ft.), I borrowed a TW that went that high from the local auto parts store.
