When you say "shell" in the din with wires, does your din already have the cage for the lower component installed? If so, the wiring for the CD player should already be there. I believe that either an equalizer or CD player was available for the '87. If my memory serves me correctly, the '87 had a CD player that used a single CD cartridge. If you plan to use the later-style CD player/ EQ, you'll need to replace the cage as well, as the earlier style cages have different internal sockets.
If there is no unit in the lower din, and you have a cage there, then your head unit should be asking for a code. If it isn't, then the cable from the upper din to the lower din has been disconnected from the head unit.
If there is no cage in the lower din, then you can add a cage, cable, and CD/EQ unit. You should already have the amp under the rear passenger seat.
If you want to stick with OEM, your best bet is to get a unit from Saabradio. That way you'll get a guaranteed working one. The CD units are prone to failure, so used ones may not work properly, or may fail shortly after installation.
