Jeff,
You are describing a hydraulic problem all right. Most commonly this is the fault of the master cylinder but can be the slave, line between the two or just the hose that goes to the reservoir. Is there an obvious leak or is the system losing fluid? Defective slaves leak externally, defective masters can leak externally or just fail to push fluid due to internal defects and that's quite common. If pumping the clutch pedal improves the situation than you almost certainly have a bad master cylinder. The good news is that they typically will give years of good service as a result of rebuilding with the inexpensive kit that is available from site sponsors and it's easy. Some guys don't even remove the master cylinder, they just push the driver's seat back, lay on the floor and rebuild it in place. (I hate laying on the floor working overhead so much that I take them out for rebuilding). If you find that the slave is leaking that fix requires removing the clutch assembly, a bigger job but there's lots of good guidance in the archives of this board. Your first task should be to look for leaks. When a master cylinder leaks in runs down the firewall behind the carpet so be sure to look there. Cheers
