I usually chime in on these posts to point out that water sounds terrible but should be perfectly safe here. The ignition lock cylinder sits below and to the rear of the ignition switch, which is operated via a gear segment and gear. Water will travel down away from the switch, after it drains out back of key cylinder. And you should actually need very little water, a few teaspoons, maybe as noted applied twice.
Also the ignition switch is mounted inverted, contacts at top, shaft out the bottom. If water did somehow move uphill on the gears it's not going to climb UP the shaft into the switch interior.
I like Zig's alcohol tip. I've used isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol.
