Depends on from where Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Mon, 29 Sep 2008 18:32:13 In Reply to: Brake Fluid leaking, steve, Sun, 28 Sep 2008 13:36:53 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Depends on where the fluid is leaking from. If it's a bleed nipple on a caliper that's just loose (unlikely), simply tighten it up. If a caliper seal has blown, a rebuilt caliper can be had for about $80 and a half-hour to replace. Add $50 for a brake fluid flush. You only need to bleed the system, but if you haven't flushed the system in a couple of years, pay the extra and have it flushed. If a hose is leaking, probably $100 for the hose and labor, and the $50 flush.
You don't mention the year of the car. If the Master Cylinder is leaking, not cheap but not too bad - probably a couple of hundred bucks. If the car has ABS and the ABS MC is leaking, or the ABS pump is leaking, big, big bucks.
If you need to refill the system, sit in the driveway, hit the brakes a bunch of times, and look for puddles. Fluid will end up on the ground at some point. Peek at the brake calipers and hoses; look in the engine compartment. That fluid is going somewhere, and it isn't being burned in the engine.
