This turbo came on my first CE I bought. That car had 42K miles on it. I don't know how many miles were on the turbo, but I do know the PO purchased it from SD and had his indy install it. I developed identical seal problems with it on that car. I had pulled that car apart to do a resto (the car had low milage, but a jaded history) and when I took the turbo off, I noticed that the nut retainer plates (keep the bolts that hold the turbo together from backing out with heating and cooling cycles) were never installed. I got an SD kit to rebuild the turbo and picked up a 360-degree seal too. I was very meticulous with the rebuild. I disassembled it, cleaned the coked oil off it, bead-blasted the exterior and repainted it. I followed every step in the rebuild instructions. The turbo never went back on that car after rebuild. When I got my current CE, I put the turbo on it. Now, 5K later I've got a leaky turbo again. My suspicion is that the turbo is a lemon (sh*t happens), since the same thing happened on two different low-milage motors. But I want to make sure I rule out other posibilities as well. When the turbo is functioning, it's a thing of beauty. Before I put it on my current CE, I had an oil-free engine bay. I can't say that now.

An indy friend of mine (35 plus years, thousands of classic 900s) said he's never seen the type of oil pressure failure that would effect only the turbo. I should have problems elsewhere in the system--I don't. He thinks I should just put the original turbo back on and save the SD unit as a momento. I'm seriously considering it. I'd hate to have this turbo rebuilt and have this happen again. On a positive note, SD has been very responsive throughout.
