Hi All,
I have a 1988 900 T16 which has just had a new SAAB clutch and second-hand clutch slave cylinder fitted, this was due to a slipping clutch and the old slave cylinder being in a poor condition. Prior to this however, gear selection was pretty smooth, with no major trouble selecting any of the gears and I expected it to be at least the same if not better once the new clutch had been fitted.
However, since the clutch change the pedal is now floppy at the top 2 inches or so, it seems slow to engage when cold, i.e. can be a slight clunk when selecting 2nd or other gears until warmed up. When stationary at idle, the gears select ok, but when they don't some pumping of the clutch pedal makes selection somewhat smoother; i.e. it definitely seems to vary.
Most importantly and frustratingly, what seems most serious of all, when travelling in 4th and moving up to 5th at 50mph +, I can hardly select 5th without there being some crunching, even if I let the revs drop to idle. On occasion when I have pumped the clutch pedal it has made a slight difference and I am able to select 5th with only a very light crunch. So again it seems pumping does have some effect on it, even if by a small amount.
I have asked the SAAB specialist who changed the clutch for advice, he says it is the gearbox, as he says the clutch seems to be moving fully, but I disagree with this! Except for the slipping clutch before the change, the gear selection was near perfect (as a 900 can be), why would a gearbox problem appear after a clutch change? The only thing that has been done since is a clutch fluid/system bleed, but that has made no difference at all.
Does anyone have any ideas? Could a worn out master clutch cylinder be casuing this problem? Or could it be the gearbox; yet it was perfect before the change?
Any help would be very much appreciated!
All the best, keep the old SAAB's running!
Cheers
