I hate to say this, but we in America have become a bit brainwashed by the automakers. You don't need an enormous truck to pull a good load. I've seen classic 900s in the United Kingdom pulling a trailer with another 900 on it.
The only real difference is that it will take longer to stop. And it will be slower to accelerate and you'll lose some fuel economy.
In the developing world very small cars pull huge loads up steep inclines. It comes down to reasonable driving skills. I think that we (Americans in the US) expect nothing to change. Whether it be fuel economy or acceleration a driver should not have to compensate. And in many ways I agree. However, I do not think it wise to drag race carrying 500 lbs behind a truck.
With the spike in oil prices I've seen "smaller" trucks pulling much heavier loads. There is a Ford F150 that pulls a full car trailer with three to 5 cars on it around the area. The guy drives reasonably and safely.
Take it from a former air-cooled VW guy, anything can be done with a bit of patience and common sense.
