Chris,
it's M93 and there's no drain plug. I did the oil service 4 months ago (say... 5K miles ago) and the whining sound didn't change a bit after that - if the whining sound and the new crackle have smth in common I bet it's not bits of metal.
Why clutch? Or tripod bearings? I kinda feel the sound by my hand if one is on the stick and stick is in the 4th gear. The most strange thing here is the period when it comes and goes. I can't imagine a thing that is spinning ~ once a second when it's 3000 RPM and 50 mph (or so) on the clocks. Can it be sorta loosen nut that makes a shaft (if there're any nuts and shafts over there) be moving in and out (here and there, back and forth) thus making gears rub agains each other?
In any other views the tranny looks pretty fine when cruising or speeding up/down on any gear but the 4th. It has around 120K miles in its file and it appears to be the 1st bad record there.
Zig
P.S.
Do you have a link for the tranny history? What did they change in MY88-91? I have the factory 4:1 manual but it covers pre-M88 transmission only and I tried to find the article seen somewhere but can not. Pls?
