You'd be surprised at how often I've opened up one of these, even "virgins" that have never been apart, and find the nut on the front end of the main shaft very loose. Once it backs off enough to make contact with the input shaft the normal rotation tends to unscrew it also. If you go to eEuroparts and look at the exploded diagram of 1990 900 manual transmission it's item #17. It's not evident in those cut open views of the unit because it's hidden inside the fifth gear hub. I always use high strength thread locking compound on them and that seems to do the job. Cheers
