Not a bad job so long as you have patience and a need to get away. I hit the usual suspects on my conversion:
-Control Arm bushings (look over the exhaust side / optional in my book)
-Timing Chain / Guides (no better time / nothing but OEM)
-Alternator/Power Steering bushings (don't use the red...stick with OEM)
-Alternator Voltage Regulator w/new Bushings (very little cost easy to do)
-Main / Rod Caps (SAAB OEM from eBay) - didn't really need to do / optional
-Lots of Loctite 518 (Saab doesn't stock all the gaskets anymore, but 518 will do). Indy likes "The Right Stuff"
-Front/Rear seals
-Motor Mounts
-Heater Control Valve (while you're under the dash for clutch retrofit)
-All gaskets (eeuroparts/or loctite 518)
-Rebuilt tranny (indy did the entire job for 1k)
-Chevron Molybdenum Grease for CVs (OEM Saab stuff is tough to find and my Saab dealer was clueless)
-Go to SPX Corporation or Kent Moore for special tools
Follow the Bentley manual and you'll be fine. I took maybe 80 hours not because it takes that long. I did because I choked down quite a few cigars, drinks and enjoyed studying the task at hand. To add, I did the job by myself with the exception of someone guiding the engine back in and hood on/off (that's it). I haven't done anything like this for 20 years but realized I could sort it out. You will be surprise how simple the Saab motor/procedure really is. I did allow my Saab indy to start up mainly because I did not have the tool to assure the tranny aligned in 3rd, retrofit my ignition and key into 5-speed assembly & bleed hydr system. Plus it was worth an extra set of eyes.
I also have a dang near perfect 90 convertible but it's an auto (ugh). The tranny is perfectly fine. I'm still consider converting it to 5-speed because it was a great stress relief and lots of fun when looking back.
Car is very sound...no regrets.
