There are 2 wires that supply 12 volts + to the radio. One is on all the time (to preserve the stations), and the other is for turning the radio on and only when the ignition is on. I don't have the wire colors in front of me, but it sounds like the power wire that stays hot is not connected to the appropriate wire to your radio to preserve the stations. At least that's what it was in my case a while back.
