This is one area I've been leaving for a shop to do for the past eight years or so. I've found that smog check centers work better with nearby shops with which they have relationships. Individuals coming in with their own car seem to get more scrutiny and suffer more headaches and lost time.
California authorities may quibble with this theory but I think it's true.
And it's a time-versus-money issue. I know the car will be done with the test and I'm free for two more years when I leave it with the shop.
I do the obvious stuff prior to the test day, like new plugs/cap/rotor and hunt down any vacuum leaks and loose hosing. I've also been dumping in two gallons of denatured alcohol on a nearly dry fuel tank just for the test.
It is kind of ridiculous. I pulled onto the highway a couple of weeks ago behind a city school bus that was belching a practical smokescreen of diesel smoke and soot. There was probably more pollution in that monster's single acceleration that my 900 emits all year.
An outrage, I say.
