I bought a very nice '88 SPG two years ago. One of the attractions of the car was that it had a freshly reconditioned gearbox. After purchase I replaced most of the fluids, etc but never checked the gearbox oil (knowing that the box had only a couple of thousand k's on it).
Anyway, a couple of weeks later the shifting became very difficult, the best way to describe it was 'tight'. I checked the gearbox oil and there was nary a trace showing on the dipstick. I refilled the box, drove it around the block a few times, then drained it and refilled it again. Apart from the nasty looking whiskers of steel attached to the magnetic sump plug it appears that the box was not destroyed. Two years later, the box is still working fine, quiet and shifts nicely. Perhaps I caught it just in the nick of time.
