Fourth Gear Problem-Tranny or Clutch?

Howdy Folks. My 91 900 turbo started grinding as I shifted into 4th gear. I could prevent it by shifting into neutral, letting the rpms drop, and then shifting to fourth. 25 miles later the clutch abruptly and completely failed. Throw out bearing is gone, teeth missing from the pressure plate, and the slave is leaking badly. I'm wondering if the fourth gear grinding was caused by the failing clutch, of if it's a separate transmission issue. I'm hesitant to spend the money on the clutch to find out I have a bad synchro in the transmission. The car has 260,000 miles, and the clutch had at least 100,000. Any help is appreciated!
