Sorry RayF, but when moister gets into the brake fluid,it will compress and shorten the lenght of the push of the clutch slave cylinder. Think of the hydraulic system being a liquid rod that activates the slave. When shorten, the clutch won't disengage as far as it should, thus allowing the internal parts in the transmission to NOT shift properly and causing grinding and improper shifting. When I purchased my first Saab,87/9000t, I thought the clutch or the trans. was going due to the hard shifting and clutch disengagement. I flushed the old fluid out of the system twice and refilled with brand new, unopened bottle of DOT4, and it made everything feel smooth and easy. I know replacing old brake fluid won't repair a bad transmission, but regular replacement of the fluid will allow shifting and hydraulic system to work correctly and last longer. Some car problems come on slowly over time, without notice, and can be easily prevented with proper maintenance. Alway replace with a fresh, unopened bottle of brake fluid as it collects moister even sitting on the shelf after opening. Peace and a great NewYear!
