my thoughts exactly, but you will find bentley says the front wheels will sply outward. and the book will tell one to set the toe accordingly, if you look at the book you will notice it has the same toe set for both front and rear tires. i would claim the bentley has a error in this area but others would challenge the bentley is right.
as for the caster i could careless how the car would preform with a little more caster or a little less caster per. wheel but seeing how the poster is talking about .5 1.0 1.5 sets is only telling me hes talking about the size of the shims, and i couldn't let alone say these numbers equal the size of shims for the car if he didn't know what a shim was because clearly hes asking how to set the camber, now after my post i know there is no doubt what a shim is or what its used for. he asked how dose one find 0 on the camber and i didn't answer this, or did i.
im sure his next question would be how would one set, or play with the camber or caster i tried to answer that in one post, if he wants more info on what dose what for what settings are needed, this is not what my post was intended for. all i tried to note was how the caster and camber is adjusted, if you would note at the beginning of my post the comments made about the correct settings these comments were made expressly for you, everyone can bicker on what settings do what all i tried to do was shed a little light on a subject that clearly has no beginning seeing how he was suggesting having the shop adjust the camber.
and i 100% agree with oldsaab on the settings of the toe, if you had read the bentley and what it says about the settings you would of seen i switched up the words in my original post according to what bentley says, call it kinda ingenuity thinking. i would think the front wheels would pigeon toe resulting in a - toe under the strain but many would dispute that.
setting the caster by removing a shim or two or all from one side under the upper control arm will set the caster its all in the book. read it
you think i make this stuff up as i go along. .... well most of it, but there's a tad bit of truth in what i say.
let me try to put the caster into perspective if there was a fist full of shims under the front and back of the upper control if one were to remove all of the front and left the back the camber would stay the same because the control arm is still pulled in however when the front of the control arm is bolted down without shims it now moved the upper arm in resulting in the upper ball joint moving back the distance, resulting in the new location of the wheel (hence setting the caster)
as to where one wants to set it i don't care, this info is just how to do it. kinda like cant sit on a toilet if you were never show-en what it was for.
just a note: i tried to dummieeize everything oldsaab said but with allot of words :)
