The solenoid is a cylinder piggy-backed on top of the starter, which is by the flywheel side of the engine (radiator side). Just making sure you aren't going to the alternator, which is on top of the engine and has a belt driving it.
The big red wire from the battery goes to the solenoid/starter and the alternator.

In the newer cars (post 1987) it isn't located directly under the exhaust.
Whanging the solenoid/starter with a variety of heavy objects is a fine motoring tradition, going all the way back to the first electric starter. I had an old Porsche that had a dedicated hammer to get it started when it got balky.
Once you've identified it as the starter, feel free to give it a good knock - no, don't dent it, but something more than a love tap or two. If it is clicking and the lights DON'T dim, it's a bad starter.
