there is a specific tightness the all bolts need to be at, the tightness of all the bolts is applied by a torque wrench, this wrench has a setting on how much foot pr pounds of torque to put on a bolt. when this is achieved the bolt will not loosen, if someone would try to tighten the bolts further with out a torque wrench as in just wing it and see if they cant get any tighter three things may happen,
one, the head bolt might snap
two, could spin the threads right out of the block
three, the bolts will now be at different torque sets and is a potential to warp the head or blow the new head gasket soon.
if the bolts were tried to be re-tighten after the gasket blew, nothing would be achieved. when a gasket blows its like a river was created in the gasket, the river being a chunk of head gasket missing. only way to stop a river is to fill the hole, the filler being a new head-gasket.
it is vital to have the surface of the head looking like new, no old gasket left on it what so ever, you should bring the head to a machine shop to get it resurfaced regardless if you think its warped or not.
you should pull the valves and seals before you bring it to them.
if you think,.. heck with it, its a wast of time taking out all the valves and run it down to have it resurfaced and reinstall the gasket with out resurfacing the head, your new head gasket will blow within a year or two.
rule of thumb. all your coolant was lost, gasket was blown, head is warped.
but its up to you, but this is a job i would not want to find myself doing yearly.
the surface of the block needs to be like new also, no old gasket remaining, don't use steal wool or a wire brush or even a drill with the wire wheel, the fibers can fall into the piston chambers and lodge in-between the rings and walls, when the motor is started they will sand the crap out of your cylinder walls, which will destroy your motor.
liquid and a razor blade, you must be careful as to not scratch or gouge the surface of the block when removing old gasket reminisce. if this were to happen the new head gasket will blow yearly, this is a very precise job your about to under take, if steps are skipped the work you are doing will be nothing more than pointless. this is why its 1000 for a saab Indy to do it, he knows these steps must be taken or the car will never get out the door.
