I guess since I also have high mileage automatics, I am qualified to speak on this too.
The transmission should only use type F fluid. Flushing the fluid is not a big deal unless your existing fluid is dark/burnt/really old. I would not use any additives unless you are experiencing some issues already because usually by that time some damage has already been done. In that case, flush, adjust the bands, and try the Lucas additive. It can't hurt.
My '89 turbo hatchback (automatic) just passed 225,000 miles and runs and shifts as it did brand spanking new. My old '87 turbo hatch had 235,000 miles on her when I sold it, and again, it ran and shifted perfectly.
Maintenance means you shouldn't wait when you start to experience slow shifting and slipping. You need to take care of it immediately. In my opinion, if everything is fine when you hit 150,000 miles, a band adjustment is not a bad idea.
