Absolultely you can adjust the band at home. It does take a special torque wrench which measures in inch pounds (not foot pounds) but otherwise it's no big deal.
Depending on the number on the tranny case, the spacer used, and adjustment procedure is a bit different.
I did this to my '87 when I felt what *might* have been a slip between the 2-3 shift. It had 230,000 miles at the time and figured I had nothing to lose. I drove it another 5,000 miles with no issues before selling it.
I have nothing bad to say about the Lucas additive....just don't see the need for it if everything is running fine. I don't see any harm in using it.
I've said this before....the transmissions in the 900 are a weak point, both automatics and manuals. The longevity depends very much on how it's driven and maintained.
